          YNU Foreign Languages School

    The School of Foreign Languages and Literature of Yunnan Normal University dates back to 1938 when it was the Department of English of the newly-founded Southwest Associated University. In 1994 it aquired its present name.The School follows the policy of serving primary education and economic construction. It mainly provides undergraduate education, but its graduate education is also continuing to expand. Applied  Linguistics,  Japanese Language and Literature, and MTI (Master of Translation and Interpreting). In  addition, the  School  admits  graduate  students in five interdisciplinary areas: Theory  of   Course Teaching, Subject (English) Teaching, Master of Education in English, Master of  Rural  Education  in English, and Master of Education in English for Special Posts. The School consists of seven research institutes and three departments which are further divided into seven teaching sections. There are four undergraduate degree programs, English, Japanese, Vietnamese and Thai. French, Spanish, Russian, Thai, Vietnamese, and Korean are also offered as second foreign languages.
    The School administers quite a number of different training centers and test centers, such as, Southwest China Teachers Training Center of UNESCO and UNDP, China Foreign Language Proficiency Testing (WSK) Kunming Center, Japanese Language Proficiency Testing (JLPT) Yunnan Center, National Accreditation Examinations for Translators and Interpreters (NAETI) Kunming Center, Yunnan Training Center of the National Business Foreign Language Test (BFT), Interpreting Training Center of China Aptitude Test for Translators and Interpreters (CATTI), Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) Yunnan Site, and Japanese Test (J. TEST) Yunnan Site, and Training Center of Yunnan’s Tourism Industry. Moreover, the School is the examining body of English in the Self-taught Higher Education Examinations of Yunnan. It should also be mentioned that the president of Yunnan Foreign Language Education Association is on the faculty of the School of Foreign Languages and Literature of Yunnan Normal University.
    The School’s main building contains 6 language labs, 14 multimedia classrooms and a library which carries over 35,600 books, magazines and audio-visual materials. We have a staff of more than 160 people. 50 members of our faculty are either full professors or associate professors with strong academic and professional backgrounds. Over half of our teachers have been to countries such as Great Britain, the USA, Canada, Australia, France, Japan, Russia, and Singapore, where they earned their MA and  PhD, or did research as visiting scholars. Our faculty also includes more than 10 experts and experienced teachers from English-speaking countries. The School has about 2,100 full-time students, including both undergraduates and graduates. We also offer compulsory English courses to all the students of the University, PhD candidates, graduates, and undergraduates.
